FACULTY of AERONAUTICS and ASTRONAUTICS
Our faculty was established within our University in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazette dated August 4, 2012 and numbered 28374. At the Executive Board Meeting of the Council of Higher Education dated 17/10/2012, it was approved to open the Departments of Aeronautical Engineering and Space Engineering.
According to the decision taken at the Erciyes University Senate Meeting dated 03/04/2015 and numbered 09 and in accordance with the approval letter of the Council of Higher Education dated 08/05/2015; Civil Aviation Management, Aircraft Electric-Electronics, Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant, Pilotage Departments (including dual education) at the School of Civil Aviation were transferred to the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The activities of the school have started to continue within the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics since the 2015-2016 Academic Year without any change in the foundation principles and objectives. The current transferred departments have started to admit students according to the MF and TM score types of the Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS) approved by OSYM. Our existing students who were entitled to enroll before the 2015-2016 Academic Year were awarded a Civil Aviation School Diploma.
The aim of our faculty is to train the technical and administrative manpower required by the aircraft industry and civil aviation service sector, and to train individuals with advanced knowledge and skills who can speak a foreign language in the specified programs. Our education and training activities are carried out by the faculty members of our Faculty and other faculties and schools of Erciyes University and by the personnel of Kayseri 2nd Air Supply and Maintenance Center Command (HIBM), the 12th Air Transportation Main Base Command and Kayseri State Airports Directorate. In particular, the 2nd HIBM Command and the 12th Air Transportation Main Base Command have made great contributions in our applied courses and some applied courses are held at the facilities of the 2nd HIBM Command.
In addition, our faculty has training protocols with myTECHNIC MRO Services located at Sabiha Gökçen Airport and THY Technic Inc. located at Atatürk Airport, and optionally, our students conduct their courses in the last 7th and 8th semesters practically in the maintenance hangars of these institutions. At the end of each academic year, our students undergo internship for 30 workdays in aviation-related institutions and organizations such as THY, TAI, TEI, military organizations with aircraft maintenance centers and Civil Airlines, and student internship activities are organized and followed by the Ministry of Transport General Directorate of Civil Aviation.
Our faculty continues its education and training activities in its own building with an area of 5000 m2 on Erciyes University Campus, in the aircraft hangar of 1125 m2 and in its separate building that includes piston and gas turbine aircraft engine bremze units located on an area of 240 m2. In the İzzet Özilhan building of our faculty, there are eight classrooms, a conference hall, a meeting room, two computer labs, an advanced computing and CAD/CAM Labs, Aircraft Electric-Electronics Lab, Indicator Lab, Mechatronics Lab, Aerodynamics Lab and Aircraft Airframe-Powerplant Workshop, Composite Workshop, Model Aircraft Workshop, Welding Workshop. The following areas are available in the İzzet Özilhan Education-Training Building: a rest hall, a study hall, a computer room open for free use at any time, four furnished open rest and study areas. The construction of the workshops building with a closed area of 3375 m2, including workshops, laboratories, a library hall, special briefing and lecture classes, storehouses for materials, etc. has been started. The construction of the second aircraft hangar and additional training building was planned in 2016. In addition, the existing facilities and service areas of the 2nd HIBM Command and the 12th Air Transport Main Base Command are also utilized.
2 professors, 3 associate professors, 13 assistant professors, 8 lecturers and 6 research assistants work in different departments of our faculty. Aircraft Airframe and Powerplant and Aircraft Electric-Electronics Departments of our faculty have been authorized to provide training and to operate as an exam center by the Ministry of Transport General Directorate of Civil Aviation in accordance with the Regulation on Aircraft Maintenance Training Organizations (SHY-147). Efforts have been ongoing to admit students to the Aeronautical Engineering and Space Engineering Departments of our faculty since the 2016-2017 Academic Year.
SCHOOL of CIVIL AVIATION
Erciyes University Vocational School of Civil Aviation, which provides technical education for two years after one year of English Language Education in Aircraft Airframe, Aircraft Powerplant, Aircraft Electric and Aircraft Electronics programs, was established according to the letter of the Council of Higher Education dated 26.12.1994 and numbered 29995.
The Education-Training Building of our school was built in memory of the late Fehmi Özilhan by the Anadolu Foundation, and it was donated to the Rectorate of Erciyes University. We are grateful to this foundation for its contributions to the Higher Education. Prof. Dr. Veysel ATLI, the late faculty member of our university, was assigned as the founding manager of the school. Süleyman DEMİREL, the 9th President of the Republic of Türkiye, Prof. Dr. Veysel ATLI, Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet ŞAHİN and Commander of the 2nd Air Supply and Maintenance Center Commander Major General Fazıl Aydınmakina made great contributions during the establishment of the school.
Our Vocational School started English preparatory class in the 1995-1996 Academic Year and technical education in the 1996-1997 Academic Year. The Vocational School experienced a total of 8-semester graduation period. In accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers numbered 2000/617 published in the Official Gazette dated 17.05.2000 and numbered 24052, the Vocational School of Civil Aviation was transformed into the School of Civil Aviation, and at the Executive Board meeting of the Council of Higher Education dated 30.05.2000, it was approved to open Aircraft Airframe-Powerplant, Aircraft Electric-Electronics and Pilotage Departments, and in accordance with the letter of the Council of Higher Education dated 21.02.2001 and numbered 03848, it was deemed appropriate to start education by admitting students to the Aircraft Airframe-Powerplant and Aircraft Electric-Electronics Departments, and the education began at the Aircraft Airframe-Powerplant and Aircraft Electric-Electronics Departments of our School with a total of 34 students in the 2001-2002 Academic Year. In the 2009-2010 Academic Year, evening education programs were opened in the Aircraft Electrical-Electronics and Aircraft Airframe-Powerplant Departments and the student admission to these departments started.
At the General Assembly Meeting of the Higher Education held on 03.07.2008, it was deemed appropriate to open a Civil Air Transportation Management Department within our school. The Department of Civil Air Transportation Management admitted its first students in both daytime education and evening education programs in the 2009-2010 Academic Year.
At the General Assembly Meeting of the Higher Education dated 13.04.2007, it was considered appropriate to establish a Civil Aviation Department within the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences and to open a master's program. Our first Master’s Degree students were admitted in the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The doctorate program was opened at the same department according to the decision of the General Assembly Meeting of the Higher Education dated 09.08.2012. In the 2013-2014 Academic Year, doctoral students started to be admitted within the department. As from the 2009-2010 Academic Year, four-year education has been provided in all departments of the School of Civil Aviation after one year of compulsory English preparatory class.
